Brasswinds are an amazing combination of human inventiveness, plumbing and high level engineering. Dozens of individual parts need to all work together to make this category of instruments easily playable and sounding both sweet and brash at the same time.
We use dozens of different tools to repair the various horns.....several different kinds of solder, dozens of dent removing tools, oils and metal cleaning compounds, almost all of which are highly specialized for brasswind repairs. There are so many different and unique materials and parts: rotary valves, piston valves, string and springs, brass, nickle, chrome, silver, gold, mother of pearl and lots of amazing craftsmanship.
I use both ultrasonic cleaning and appropriate chemicals for cleaning parts and the interiors of the instruments. All of that plumbing fills with "gunk" over time, so it's important to have your instrument cleaned periodically. If you saw what comes out of the horns when we clean them after a few years, you would likely want yours thoroughly cleaned at least once a year.

Cleaning an instrument is inexpensive and can improve valve and slide action, free up tuning slides and also improve tone.
Simple dent removal, cleaning and straightening can really make a difference for trombone slides and trumpet 1st and 3rd valve tuning slides
