Professional and Student Instruments
These are among the most complex and difficult instruments to maintain, adjust and keep in top-notch playing condition.Patience and exacting skill are critical in making sure all adjustments are working properly. I have found that, despite many repair technicians' conscientious efforts to repair oboes and bassoons, pads often continue to leak and there is often "lost motion" left in these instruments' mechanisms after work is done. Other than skill and experience, a repair person needs to be inventive and somewhat compulsive to work on these instruments successfully....perhaps a bit like the musicians who play these amazing horns!
To prevent cracking, wooden instruments require periodic oiling of the bore,
especially in our dry, winter weather.
Double reeds are particularly complex. The interaction of various keys must be adjusted systematically and very precisely to insure that all notes play with all fingerings and across all registers.
Please feel free to contact me to make an appointment to have a free assessment of your instrument. I often can help to resolve longstanding problems and would be happy to work with you closely to insure everything is working exactly as you would like.
